"United We Stand, Divided We Fall: Leadership Development in U.S. Labor Unions SEIU BOLD/Rockwood A Case Study"

Advisor: Dr. Joshua Collins

The tumultuous environment surrounding labor unions in the U.S. has forced labor organizations to take a deeper look at their own organizational and leadership structures that may have contributed to their current state of demise. The purpose of this study is to investigate the approaches U.S. Labor Unions have been taking to capture, recognize, and examine the organizational effectiveness of their leadership development programs. This study focuses on the Building Organizational Leadership and Development (BOLD)/Rockwood program within the Service Employee International Union (SEIU). Using a qualitative Case Study, this research interviewed 10 participants from SEIU. The study assessed leaders' descriptions of the BOLD/Rockwood program and its influence on their teams and organizations. The research has revealed the need for clarity and particularity around the definitions , goals, and roles of the BOLD/Rockwood in SEIU.
