Profile

I originally hail from San Antonio, TX. My interest in higher education began during my undergraduate years at UT-Austin. I spent several years working as a student ambassador for the SHARE program in the Office of Admissions. During this time many admissions practices, and the SHARE program itself, were altered significantly due to the Hopwood v. Texas case which effectively ended the use of Affirmative Action in admissions at the time. Politics aside, I found the behind the scenes systematic development of a new admissions model fascinating. During my MBA years, I obtained a position in the Physiology department at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and eventually became the sole international graduate admissions officer within the UT-San Antonio Graduate School office. It was at this point I came to realization that I wanted to make a career working in academia itself and became interested in pursuing a doctorate in higher education administration. After exploring my options I attended Michigan State University where I obtained a Ph.D. in higher, adult, and lifelong education (HALE) and became  interested in faculty and academic affairs issues. I had many wonderful professional experiences there including working for the NSF-funded Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning, which focuses on improving faculty teaching preparation in the STEM disciplines, and the Ford Foundation on a project examining their higher education funding practices. I was also heavily involved with MSU’s central academic governance as a graduate student representative. After graduating I obtained a one year lecturer/postdoc position at the University of Denver’s Higher Education program and then became a coordinator at the University of Minnesota in the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs.

In 2010 I transferred to OLPD. In this role my main duties include representing the department and all programs within on a daily basis for purposes of program promotion, recruitment, and ongoing support of graduate students and graduate studies. I also develop, interpret, and implement policies affecting graduate students in the department's wide array of graduate programs (e.g. examinations, handbooks, student progress review, graduate assistantships, registration exceptions, etc.) as well as teach in the Higher Education program.
