Stewart Serves as UC Berkeley Guest Instructor, Keynote
Dr. Nate Stewart was invited to serve as a guest instructor at the UC Berkeley School of Education this July, where he engaged aspiring and current P–20 educational leaders across the Bay Area—including San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and Richmond—on topics of data equity and justice-centered leadership.
Through his appointment with the UC Berkeley Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) and the Leadership for Equity and Democracy (LEAD) program (EdD), Dr. Stewart led a series of in-person sessions designed to support educators in dismantling inequitable data practices and reimagining educational systems. These engagements were part of the 21st Century California School Leadership Academy (21CSLA), specifically through the Bay Area Regional Academy, which serves equity-driven leaders from six counties.
In addition to his instructional role, Dr. Stewart was featured as the keynote speaker and dialogue facilitator for a two-part hybrid event series titled Advocating for Targeted Strategies that Support Black Student Achievement. These convenings brought together regional leaders from targeted strategy offices across multiple school districts—including Oakland Unified, West Contra Costa, Berkeley Unified, and Alameda Unified—to share insights and challenges related to coalition-building and measuring impact beyond test scores.
Dr. Stewart’s presentations grounded the discussions in his research on critical quantitative methods and Black liberatory pedagogy, sparking dynamic exchanges among leaders and reaffirming the importance of relational data practices that center student voice and community knowledge. His work not only framed the conversations, but also helped shape the network’s approach to measuring success in ways that affirm the brilliance of Black students.
